Warm Homes Loan Scheme

Government-supported finance for home energy upgrades.
The scheme is designed to make borrowing for eligible low-carbon improvements more affordable, including solar PV and battery storage.

What is the Warm Homes Loan Scheme?

The Warm Homes Loan Scheme (WHLS) is a UK Government-supported, lender-led initiative designed to help households meet the upfront cost of low-carbon home improvements. Government funding is provided to participating lenders to help reduce the cost of finance available to eligible customers.

The scheme is intended primarily for owner-occupiers and private-sector landlords who can borrow and repay finance but may otherwise be put off by the upfront cost of home improvements.

SOLAR PV

Scheme loan cap up to £15,000 for eligible solar PV installations.

BATTERY STORAGE

Scheme loan cap up to £15,000 for eligible battery storage.

LOWER-COST FINANCE

Government support is designed to reduce the cost of borrowing. The actual rate is set by the participating lender.

Who is the scheme aimed at?

  • UK-wide: the scheme is designed for eligible households across the United Kingdom.
  • Homeowners: owner-occupiers are a primary customer group.
  • Private landlords: private rented-sector landlords may also be eligible.
  • No scheme-level income threshold: eligibility is based on the lender’s affordability and credit assessment rather than a government income test.
  • No scheme-level minimum EPC: lenders may apply their own additional criteria.

Why this matters if you’re considering solar

Solar PV and battery storage can require a significant upfront investment. The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is intended to give eligible customers another way to spread that cost through regulated finance, while government support helps participating lenders offer more affordable borrowing.

IMPORTANT: This is a loan, not a grant. You will repay the amount borrowed to the participating lender. The Warm Homes Loan Scheme does not mean every customer will receive 0% finance. Interest rates, APRs, repayment periods, affordability criteria and approval are determined by the participating lender. Final lender availability and product details are subject to the Government’s launch and approval process.

Expected launch & customer applications
